Medicinal uses of pectin.
Pectin is a gel-forming dietary fibre that forms of plant cells and is found mainly in the skins, peels and rinds of fruits and vegetables. Orange rind contains 30 per cent
pectin, and apple peel 15 per cent.
Pectin has several nutritional rolls. It binds cholesterol and bile acids in the intestines promoting there excretion and thus helping to lower cholesterol. Pectin also binds with toxic metals such as lead, mercury and cadmium and excretes them from the body.
Pectin supplements are sold in health food shops and have been found to control diabetes, treating constipation and reducing the risk of a heart attack.
